Loving Summer While in Braces
The Food of Summer!
While summer get-togethers might look different this year, they are still a highlight of summer fun for everyone! What’s a summer get-together without corn on the cob, watermelon, and other tasty treats!?! You might feel a little left out seeing these tasty foods on the platter, but with a little forethought, you too can enjoy them! Corn on the cob is one of our all-time favorites here at Hough Orthodontics, but is on the no-no list for eating with braces. But here’s a secret, if you cut the corn off the cob, you can still have that tasty treat, just served slightly different. Also, remove the seeds from your watermelon prior to eating and you can still enjoy this tasty summer treat. You do not have to eliminate ice cream, soda, sweetened teas and other sugary drinks, but just limit them as the sugars can hide around those braces quite effectively. Always remember to brush after each meal and/or sugary snack. If you do not have access to a toothbrush, swish real well with water until you can brush away the sugar bugs and food that may be hiding in your braces.
Summer sports area fantastic way to stay active, and work off all those sugary treats we take part in over summer! If you are currently in braces, wearing a mouth guard is your best bet to protect your lips, cheeks and teeth in case you get hit in the mouth with a ball, or a flying elbow. If you need a mouth guard, call our office, we would be happy to give you one!
Summer road trips were a staple in our family. During the summer months, it is so easy to quickly pack up and hit the road for a fun destination. While road trips might take a little bit more planning these days, road snacks are still as yummy as they were when I was kid. Remember that popcorn, gum, hard/sticky candy are a big no-no while wearing braces; those items can damage your braces and slow down your treatment. Instead, opt for these road trip snacks instead: Granola bars, string cheese, gold fish, and bananas.
Going through orthodontic treatment can be uncomfortable, and not being able to enjoy your favorite snacks can be disappointing. But, with a little bit of planning and some extra thought, you can still have an amazing summer!
